When something bad happens to a character in a story, but it isn't resolved, it points to the idea of tragedy. Tragedy in literature is meant to express the suffering of people with the intent to "pleasure" the audience.
Tragedy can take on many forms. There's tragedy of the commons, which is "an economic theory of a situation within a shared-resource system where individual users acting independently according to their own self-interest behave contrary to common good of all users by depleting that resource through their collective action." Now that basically talks about people doing something for their own self gain, even though it may have a negative effect on others or something else.
Then there's Revenge tragedy which is meant to depict someone with the intent on hurting another with a vengeful purpose. This is shown in Hamlet by Shakespeare, because many characters are trying to get one another killed for various reasons.
The quote "While many cultures have developed forms that provoke this paradoxical response, the term tragedy often refers to a specific tradition of drama that has played a unique and important role historically in the self-definition of Western civilisation.", does make a lot of sense when a person simply thinks about the amount of very famous tragedies that are still prominent in western culture such as any of Shakespeare's tragedies or Greek tragedies.
