Before this week in class, I didn’t think too much about how expansive the concept of imagery is. Originally I would usually think it had mostly to do with the visual side due to the word image, but as class progressed, I understood that it also included the other senses, which honestly made me shocked because I honestly had never thought of it that way. With this lesson, the class looked at their weekly poem, I felt a Funeral, in my Brain by Emily Dickinson, in which we delved deep within it and analysed the various forms of imagery that it contained, whether it be visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or organic. This got interesting because of the disconnect of the imagery between speaker and reader because, for example, the speaker never says that they can see what is happening, yet the reader still visualizes elements of the poem. Eventually, the class was asked to write a timed essay on the poem which included the imagery, as well as language, structure, and point of view.
Afterwards, I felt as though I had a deeper understanding of imagery than I had the previous week, leaving me to be fairly proud of myself. I would rate my understanding of this week’s lessons a 4.5/5. I felt like I’ve learned a lot this week yet I still feel a bit rough on essay structure more than anything at the moment.
